The Smallholder and Agri-SME Finance and Investment Network (SAFIN) builds bridges between agricultural SMEs, capital providers and other institutions that support their growth. Through SAFIN, 56 institutions have come together to generate new evidence, influence policies and co-design investments to close the multi-billion-dollar financing gap faced by agricultural SMEs. Small Foundation has supported SAFIN’s operations and network development through funding and non-financial support.

Emily Kitongo, Knowledge Management and Communication Officer at SAFIN shares results of the 2022 network health survey at the SAFIN Annual Plenary Meeting. Morelia, Mexico, 21 November 2022.

Systems lens

Access to appropriate finance is a critical constraint on the development of agricultural SMEs across the world. SAFIN members work together to scale up access to capital and services for smallholder farmers and agricultural SMEs. SAFIN brings institutional and private capital providers, technical assistance providers, farmers’ organisations and SMEs together to identify shared ecosystem issues, addressing gaps via knowledge sharing, advocacy, and the co-creation of initiatives. By bringing together its members to increase the flow of investment to agricultural SMEs, SAFIN is supporting a financial ecosystem that allows rural SMEs to be commercially viable and sustainable.

Partner perspective

“Small Foundation’s network practice has been an important avenue for SAFIN to improve its efforts to weave connections and collaboration among key players in the agri-SME finance sector. In 2022, some of the fruits of this partnership came to the fore as SAFIN refined its member benefits package and launched a new members’ portal. The portal includes various features that were inspired by the experiences and best practices highlighted through the Network Leadership Series sponsored by Small Foundation.”
