Warc Africa (Warc) has operated in West Africa for over ten years. Founded in Sierra Leone, Warc expanded its operations to Ghana in 2019 and over this time has continued to develop its business model to solve poverty and hunger at scale whilst seeking financial sustainability. Warc aims to unlock the potential of farmers by removing barriers and selling inputs as a service, knowledge building and access to markets. In 2020, Small Foundation supported Warc’s expansion in Ghana and in 2022 provided a guarantee to help unlock short-term debt financing which has supported Warc’s growth.

Systems lens

Recognising the depth of expertise developed by Warc after a decade of experience working with smallholder farmers in rural Sierra Leone, Small Foundation was keen to support its expansion to Ghana and pursuit of impact through a commercially viable model. Warc continues to explore innovative approaches to effectively serve rural farmers including the application of regenerative agricultural practices and implementation of gender-focused strategies. Small Foundation’s systems vision is for Warc’s success to act as a demonstration to others which evidences and propagates a scalable, sustainable approach to serving rural farmers.

Partner perspective

“Small Foundation has been instrumental in supporting Warc’s growth since the beginning of the partnership and over the last year. Through this partnership we were able to refine our model, which had been born in Sierra Leone, and put it into practice in Ghana. We have since continued to refine the model, scaling our work significantly in the Upper West of Ghana, serving smallholder farmers with better inputs, helping conversion to better practices and regenerative agriculture and fair and transparent markets.”
