Palladium is an international development sector advisory, management, and implementation firm, working with a range of stakeholders on solving the world’s most pressing challenges. In recent years, Small Foundation has partnered with Palladium on two pieces of ecosystem research in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA): an analysis of liquidity mechanisms; and on the potential for geomapping to increase lending to smallholder farmers.

Systems lens

Our partnership with Palladium to date has focused on research developed around financing gaps and opportunities in the SSA agricultural enterprise ecosystem, seeking to contribute to the knowledge base and possible solutions to finance access challenges. The aim of the liquidity mechanism scoping was to address ‘missing middle’ finance challenges for agricultural enterprises, and hopefully to inform future design that is beneficial for both the investor and the MSME. Through the geomapping research, Palladium evaluated the viability of geomapping as a tool to assess risk for smallholder farmers, with the intention to increase access of smallholders to financial services.

Partner perspective

“Through Small Foundation’s funding, Palladium evaluated the viability of geomapping as a tool to assess risk of smallholder farmers and therefore increase the likelihood that intermediaries (including financial institutions, micro-finance institutions, agri-businesses, cooperatives, etc.) provide financial services to them. Through discussions with intermediaries, geomapping providers and subject matter experts, Palladium found a strong business case for geomapping’s usefulness. Small Foundation was instrumental in identifying and forging long-lasting connections with key stakeholders in the agtech space.”
