The Collaborative for Frontier Finance (CFF) works across the early-stage finance ecosystem to help stakeholders coordinate, work together and seek solutions to common challenges. CFF stakeholders include local capital providers, institutional investors, development agencies, philanthropic funders, and field building organisations. Small Foundation is a founding member of CFF, has supported CFF to launch and develop the Early-Stage Capital Provider (ESCP) Network, and in 2022 supported the annual convening of the ESCP Network in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Systems lens
CFF and Small Foundation recognise that while Africa’s SGBs are key to the continent’s sustainable and prosperous economic development, there is a systemic failure in meeting the capital needs of African SGBs. Seeking to address this across various points of market failure, CFF brings stakeholders together to collaboratively accelerate financing solutions that target SGBs. In addition to network activities, CFF facilitates ecosystem research, learning and linkages to capital. Small Foundation shares CFF’s commitment to improving access to local capital and supporting local lenders.

“In addition to continuing to play an active role on our steering committee, in 2022 Small Foundation supported CFF’s annual convening in Dar es Salaam, which hosted the ESCP network and institutional investors with the goal to mobilise more capital towards the ‘missing middle’ – the only dedicated event targeting this space. This collaboration enabled the group to leverage each other’s successes to start painting a collective impact picture, as well as creating new opportunities, including sparking a follow-on convening later that year in the Hague.”
